French Drain Solutions: Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing issue with water ingress that progressively worsened over time. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, situated at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome intrusion caused damage to the flooring, encouraged the growth of rising damp, and led to mould proliferation within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Do You Determine the Source of Water Ingress?

The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water descending from the rear and side yards of neighbouring properties. In the absence of a robust drainage system to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.

Designing an Effective Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing developed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to capture and redirect water before it could affect the home’s foundation.

The project comprised several vital components:

  • A French drain system expertly crafted to collect surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically positioned holes in the curb to guarantee efficient discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller pipes, linked to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, employing concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes excavated using an excavator to create a solid barrier against the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient on-site soil removal facilitated by a dumper for streamlined site management.

What Measures Can You Implement for Efficient Water Management?

The newly established drainage system now effectively collects both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. This solution provides the homeowner with a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
